Peacock Butterfly Caterpillars

7/24/2020

Picture
An army of caterpillars (peacock butterfly?) enjoying some nettles on a small patch of allotment left to grow wild to encourage wildlife. Spotted in late June on the east side.

Earthworm revival

2/12/2020

Picture
Earthworms surfacing on a west side plot—the first earthworm sighting for seven years in a difficult soggy plot that is now higher, drier and more worm-friendly thanks to some well-engineered raised beds. Photo NS

Sleeping fox

9/6/2019

Picture
NM, East side. Spotted mid-August in the evening having a nap. Have since found out that this is what foxes do in the wild—sleep out in the open during the day. Perhaps getting forty winks before night falls.

Small is beautiful

8/13/2019

Picture
Chris and Christine on the east side have witnessed a cloud of tadpoles metamorphose into an army of pea-sized yet perfectly formed frogs in a small pond between spring and summer this year.

Ahoy there! Red Admiral enjoys brief sunny, dry spell

8/13/2019

Picture
A pristine Red Admiral spotted early August at an east side plot. Buddlia in full bloom attracting various butterfly species to my plot—Painted Lady, Red Admiral, Comma and Cabbage Whites all at large. Nicola east side

A festival of Painted Ladies

8/13/2019

Picture
Spotted in early August on an east side plot. I counted nine of these on a neighbour's lavendar patch the same day, beautiful but flighty. Nicola, east side

Lesser underwing moth caterpillar?

5/21/2019

Picture
From plot holder Esme: a picture of what I think is a yellow underwing moth caterpillar (though not certain)—spotted 13th May, east side—I think they do potentially eat various veg, but also dandelions and other 'weeds'! Find out more about the lesser yellow underwing moth (Noctua comes) here.

The Ladybirds are taking over..

5/8/2019

Picture
It seems it's a big year for aphid-munching ladybirds. This one courtesy of plot holder Chris, May 2019.

Newt news

4/18/2019

Picture
Spotted a.m. April 12th 2019 by east side plotholder NS. Possibly a smooth newt? Newts are tricky to identify--find out more in our pest or guest newt feature.

Seven-spot ladybird

3/31/2019

Picture
Coccinella septempunctata, seven-spot ladybird, I have seen a few of these around the plot over the past couple of weeks on sunny days—NM West side plot, March 31 2019.
