Warriston allotments' guidelines
Waste No plot vegetation or waste of any kind should be dumped on the communal compost heap, dumped outside the bin, in the car park, near the cottage, along pathways, or in the woods.
Communal Bin at the gate is for non-biological and non-burning material only: this includes metal, plastic and glass. We generally enjoy a very good record of collection, the bin is emptied once a week in summer, less regularly in winter. Many thanks to all plot holders for keeping the area clear and the bin in working order. Do not overfill. What can I put in the bin? Glass, metal and plastic, specifically materials that cannot safely be burnt, recycled or composted on the allotments. What is not allowed in the bin? Plants, wood, paper, card, turf or earth Does it really matter what I put in the bin? Yes, as it will not be emptied if it contains items not permitted, or if it is overflowing and will not close What do I do with things that can't go in this communal bin? If you have something too big or inappropriate for the communal bin, you must remove it from the site yourself. The Edinburgh City Council dumps (see Useful Links) will take nearly everything. What do I do if the bin is full? Please keep the items on your plot and wait for the next collection. Do not try to force your items into a full bin or litter the area around the bin. Check the bin regularly on your way into the site to see if there's space. Most plotholders deal with their glass, metal or plastic waste gradually over several months (or years) in this way. Scrap Metal In the spring there is a scrap metal collection, check the notice boards for information. Recycle what you can. Can you mend that old fence? Or find a way of re-using a pile of ancient bricks? Send us your recycling tips/photos for the website Organic ambition The site is aiming to become completely organic. For environmental concerns and to encourage natural predators (birds, bees, hoverflies etc) please stop using pesticides as there are other solutions out there. Learn to love slugs (they are wonderful in the compost heap). Public Paths adjoining your plot should be kept clear of long grass, overhanging obstacles, potholes and dips. Water taps are on from end March to end October. Dogs must be kept on a lead and within your own plot's boundaries. Notice boards news and other information is displayed on the notice boards in public areas by the main gate, at the parking area on the east side and at the bottom plot path on the south side. FEDAGA Contact the Federation of Edinburgh District Allotments and Gardens Association for general information and advice. City of Edinburgh See the city allotment site rules as set out by Edinburgh City Council. This includes details on what you can grow and notices of eviction procedure if it falls into disrepair. |
Burning at Warriston
Fires are allowed on Sundays from beginning October to end April. Advice for burning Before starting a fire please contact the Fire Service Control Room on 0131 228 1367 to advise the location and possible duration. If you can co-ordinate this with your neighbouring plot holders (ie one call to cover a group) this cuts the number of calls, but the control room is happy to receive multiple calls. Don't burn plastics, carpets or other carcinogenic materials. Out of respect for those living or taking exercise close by, please keep smoke under control. Keep the fire small. Better to top up a fire at regular intervals than try to burn it all at once in one big fire. All burning must be constantly supervised. All fires must be fully extinguished before the plot holder leaves. Re-contact control on the above number to advise that controlled burning has ended. Visitors Those wishing to visit must first contact the association on: [email protected] Details are required well in advance of the visit. These include: 1. Times 2. Dates 3. Names 4. Numbers 4. Reason for visiting One-off entry is usually straightforward to obtain, though is dependent on a volunteer key holder being available. Multiple entry for groups/individuals wishing to visit over a period of time is more difficult owing to the practicalities of arranging for a volunteer key holder to be present at each time of entry. WAA cannot guarantee such visits will always be possible as these put both students and plot holders in a unmanageable position. Without a proper arrangement in place, visitors should not linger at the gate unannounced, waiting for a key holder to let them in. This puts pressure and responsibility on plot holders. However justified the reason to enter may be, there are many aspects to this that become problematic once visitors are in e.g. How do they get out? What happens if all key holders have left the site for the day? What does a visitor do in case of accident and who is responsible? Supervision on site: Visitors must be in contact with a key holder for the duration of their visit. At no time should individual plots be entered without permission from the relevant plot holder. All large student groups must be supervised by a member of the institution arranging the visit. Smaller groups should contact WAA to find out whether a key holder is available to look after them at the time they request. Staff planning a course or educational activity related to Warriston please be aware that, while we gladly accommodate such visits where possible, it must not be assumed that students will subsequently be able to access the site on demand or at times requested. |
