Welcome to Warriston allotments site guidelines
Burning at Warriston
Fires are allowed on Sundays from beginning October to end April.
Advice for burning
1. Before starting a fire please contact the Fire Service Control Room on 0131 228 1367 to advise the location and possible duration. If you can co-ordinate this with your neighbouring plot holders (ie one call to cover a group) this cuts the number of calls, but the control room is happy to receive multiple calls.
2. Don't burn plastics, carpets or other carcinogenic materials.
3. Out of respect for those living or taking exercise close by, please keep smoke under control. Keep the fire small. Better to top up a fire at regular intervals than try to burn it all at once in one big fire.
4. All burning must be constantly supervised. All fires must be fully extinguished before the plot holder leaves.
5. Re-contact control on the above number to advise that controlled burning has ended.
***
Public Paths adjoining your plot should be kept clear of long grass, overhanging obstacles, potholes and dips.
Water taps are on from end March to end October.
Dogs must be kept on a lead and within your own plot's boundaries.
The bin at the gate is for non-biological and non-burning material only: this includes metal, plastic and glass. Do not overfill. The bin is emptied once a week in summer, less regularly in winter. Go to communal bin for more information.
No waste of any kind should be dumped outside the bin, in the car park, near the cottage, along pathways, or in the woods.
No plot vegetation or waste of any kind should be dumped on the communal compost heap beside the cottage.
Notice boards: news and other information is displayed on the notice boards in public areas by the main gate, at the parking area on the east side and at the bottom plot path on the south side.
Committee meetings: plotholders are welcome to join committee meetings. Minutes are posted on the notices boards. For more go to Warriston info.
For advice on plot care contact us here.
Contact the Federation of Edinburgh District Allotments and Gardens Association (FEDAGA) for general information and advice.
Plot number: Your plot number is detailed on the Warriston site map.
Organic ambition: The site is aiming to become completely organic. For environmental concerns and to encourage natural predators (birds, bees, hoverflies etc) please stop using pesticides—there are other solutions out there. Learn to love slugs (they are wonderful in the compost heap).
City of Edinburgh: See the city allotment site rules as set out by Edinburgh City Council. This includes details on what you can grow and notices of eviction procedure if it falls into disrepair.
