Summerside Kindergaten at Warriston Allotments
Ros, teacher from Summerside Kindergarten, tells us what the kids and staff get from visiting the plot
The aim of these visits is to teach the children about where food comes from and how it is grown—'the field to plate' ethos. Eating the produce either on site or prepared in the kitchen is one of the great benefits of the allotment. The children really enjoy eating fruit straight from the plants.
The children are involved in all aspects of caring for the plot and this includes many jobs for them to work on. Whatever their age they are happy to water, harvest, dig, plant, prune, make compost and much more. The understanding of sustainability that comes through their allotment experiences fits in well with the strong consideration we give to participating in 'Eco Schools'. The children also have good opportunities to play at the allotment—much of the play is linked to the elements such as mud, sand, stones and water. We call it nature play. |
