September 2018 — Coriander

Coriander is also know as cilantro, or Chinese parsley. It is an annual in the Apiaceae family.

You can eat all of the plant—fresh leaves and dried seeds being most used in cooking.

Coriander seeds can be sown directly outside up till mid September. Choose a sheltered spot that will get winter sun and is in the lee of wintery gales. Use the small leaves as soon as they sprout—the plant is unlikely to flower and will give you a delicate offering for dark day curries all through autumn/winter, provided they are away from frost spots. If you have a polytunnel/greenhouse, you can grow some there.

When sowing in spring, choose a warm shady spot in order to stave flowering off for as long as possible. Coriander is prone to bolting. If it does, let the seed set and harvest that in place of the leaves. Grind in a mortar and pestle into spice mixes or add as a whole spice to warm all your spring veg recipes.
