August 2019 - Spring Greens
Spring greens can be any variety of spring cabbage. And there's still just time to sow this month, for squeaky, crunchy tasty leaves in March/April.
All cabbages are grown in exactly the same way, just the sowing times vary. Sow in July/August, transplant in September/October. They need firm (walk across the surface before planting), fertile soil and sun. Sow in an open spot on your plot and transplant when big enough to move (5/6 leaves), at least by mid-October. Set the lower leaves at ground level. Plant or thin to 4 inches apart and thin (if necessary) in February. Water well when young and also as the heads are forming. Cover in net or fleece from the get go to keep out hungry pigeons who will take them to the bone if they discover them. When cutting heads in spring, cut a cross in the stump to bring on a second, albeit smaller crop. Duncan (RHS) and Durham are both good varieties. www.rhs.org.uk/advice/grow-your-own/vegetables/cabbages |
